In western France, a tragic knife attack at a high school has prompted urgent appeals for action from top government figures. On Thursday, a 15-year-old student allegedly stabbed four classmates during lunch at Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides secondary school in Nantes. This resulted in the death of one girl and severe injuries to others, before teachers managed to subdue the attacker.

The suspect is now in custody and undergoing a psychiatric assessment. According to France24, a police source revealed that the assailant started on the second floor, targeting one student initially, and then attacked three others as they descended a staircase. He even entered two classrooms and was found carrying two knives.

French Prime Minister François Bayrou addressed the nation soon after the incident, emphasizing the pervasive violence among some young people. Bayrou stressed the need to reflect on education, values, and the respect for human life. He announced immediate increased security checks inside and around schools, as well as the formation of a commission to explore more effective ways to address teenage knife crimes, including examining weapon sales and knife ownership laws.

French President Emmanuel Macron also reacted to the tragedy, offering his condolences and support. He praised the swift response of the school staff, lauding their bravery for intervening to stop the attacker. Macron conveyed the nation’s solidarity with the school community.

Education Minister Elisabeth Borne and Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau traveled to Nantes to meet with victims and students, showing government support. The area witnessed a heavy police and military presence during the investigation. Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides is a private school complex that includes primary and middle school buildings.

Following the attack, all students were placed under lockdown, with school officials contacting families of the approximately 2,000 enrolled students to provide information and ensure support for those affected by the incident.
